Ricardo Hinojosa with Origami Workshop

"Paper Folding Patterns: Origami as Creative Tool"

Origami means to fold paper. Long before paper existed, folding was already with us—nature folds, and so do we. Paper is simply the perfect medium to receive the grace of compression and overlap because of its simplicity and modern mundanity. There was a time when paper was rare, and therefore precious. The wonder is that we are now surrounded by this everyday miracle material that can directly channel our imagination, if we only learn to listen and talk to it. To understand how folding answers us, we must fold and look, play and develop our intuition.

For anything to fold, there is a procedure. One thing leads to another, and the art manifests through the journey of moving from one step to the next, from one state to another.

In this workshop, we want to explore and reveal the miraculous inner structures of Islamic Patterns through the art of paper folding. Fantastic geometric compositions await us, ready to be manifested and contemplated. With our hands, we will discover how simple, interconnected rules can create inspiring systems. We will approach several patterns using different folding styles. While it might sound complicated, you will quickly see that it is through folding that we stop thinking and let the paper guide us to eternal reward.
